Ember Flame

Ember Flame by Kaycee Browning.

I don't think I am ready to review this book...I am going to do my best without inserting a lot of yelling and crying.

 Summary:
Ember is an orphan who lives in a village where no one likes her. She is bitter and alone and thinks her life is miserable - and it only gets worse when her village is attacked and burned. Forced to leave everything behind, Ember makes her way into a city. There she meets two young men and an old woman, and is thrown into a plot of a decaying government. She is forced to face her own insecurities as she has to decide who she can trust, and who is out to kill her to stop her from using a special gift which will enable her to save the world.

Okay, first, the mention of the two young men above...this is NOT a love triangle story. It isn't even really a romance story. There is a small romance, but it is a nice one, sweet and fun. Now that I've got that cleared up, I shall proceed.

I wasn't sure what to think about this book when I started it. It reminds me a lot of the Avatar, the Last Airbender show. I could never tell if the story was taking place in the future or some kind of alternate past. (Kind of like with the Lemony Snicket books.) Not that I am complaining. I loved that it had that feel, it gave it a kind of Fantasy, Science Fiction feeling. I loved it, I loved the whole world it is set in. It is dangerous, and filled with surprises and unexpected twists.

What I loved best about it though were the characters. I didn't think I would like Ember AT ALL. She first sets out for revenge, and wants to make everyone in the world pay for the bad things that happened to her. She is bitter and angry and doesn't want help from anyone. (Everything in a character I am not crazy about.) But she goes and changes and by the end of the book I loved her to bits. Kaycee handled her character really well, I can't wait to spend more time with Ember in the next book. *Hint, hint.*
I loved all the other characters as well, except the bad guy. Because he was creepy and bad and EVIL. And I'm mad at him for reasons. But he was a well done bad guy, so I can give him a bit of a tiny point for that.
My favourite characters though were Hail and Coal. I wasn't sure if I would like Hail at the beginning, but he was like Ember and really grew on me. My favourite though was Coal. I loved Coal. So very much. Yeah, and I can't say more about him....but I loved him.

The only problem I could find with the book is I think everyone bled too much to actually live as long as they did. But it was a cool book and well written and I didn't care. (Well, I did care because I didn't want them to keep getting hurt. I didn't care about the technical stuff.) That was all made up for though because the book almost made me cry. I would have cried to, but I was in denial when the crying part came and refused to believe it had happened. I never cry if there is a chance that it can be reversed, if you cry then there is no chance of it being a "Haha! Got you!" moment.

But, this is a new favourite of mine, and I want the second book...like, now. I must find out what happens next.

  1. Great review! Ember Flame is an incredibly cool book!! Can’t wait to read the other two books, especially because I really want to know more about Hail and Flake.
